Description

Vercingétorix, first outstanding hero of French history, was in a first time a young Gallian who learned military discipline in the mighty Roman legions. Back in his tribe, and despite nobles' reluctences, he used his tactical talents and his eloquence to unify Gallian peoples and to fight the Roman invader.
Proud, Brave, disciplined and ingenious, Vercingétorix represents for the mighty Roman legions one of their greatest enemy. But every time he has to face an even more fearsome strategist : Caesar...

Chronology of his life :

-80 BC : Birth of Vercingétorix

-58 BC : Caesar, called by Eduens, defeat the Helvetians at Bibracte (beginning of the Gallic war)

-53 BC : Carnutes' revolt

-52 BC (winter) : Vercingétorix raise troops, take the power in the Arverni tribe, and make a coalition with different Gallian peoples

-52 BC (spring) : Caesar get through Cevens and attack the arvernis before going to the Rhône valley to besiege Avaricium which fall 25 days later

-52 BC (june) : Beginning of the Gergovia siege (where Vercingétorix took refuge)

-52 BC (summer) : Victory of Vercingétroix at Gergovia, which confirms his supreme command over Gallian peoples

-52 BC (september) : Vercingétorix fortify the city of Alésia to protect his people from the legions with 80000 men, Caesar besiege the city, that's the beginning of the battle of Alésia, the bloodiest one.

-52 BC (october) : Vercingétorix has lost too much men, his defeat is obvious, he asked to Caesar what he had to do for his people to be spared, then he deliver himself to the Roman strategist to put down his weapons to his feet.

-46 BC : Caesar become Dictator for life and Vercingétorix, who has been prisoner for 6 years, is executed

Normally I'm suspicious when a tribal warlord is treated like a national hero for fighting against the Roman; primarily because the bloodthirsty monster Boudica gets that treatment in Britain (I don't like her because she killed children at Camulodunum), but I digress. From what I could find, Vercingetorix is actually deserving of praise. He surrendered himself to save a number of his people.

Having said that, the only thing he has in common with contemporary French people is geography. The French are culturally and genetically descended in greatest part from the Germanic Franks, not from the Celtic Gauls.
